stay at home dads

i'm hoping to get your take on this video. i came across it over the weekend, and it's been laying on me a little. watch it, give me your opinion. deal with the scripture. deal with the approach. i'd love to hear what you have to say.

disclaimer: i am a stay at home dad, and i study the bible. i am frequently challenged by other's takes on things and attempt to allow people to speak into my life. please be honest with me.

the resurgence: stay at home dads.

Provide (from Strong's Concordance)
1) to perceive before, foresee
2) to provide, think of beforehand
a) to provide for one
b) to take thought for, care for a thing

I think some how Driscoll assume's the only way to accomplish the above is the man (and only the man) getting a job. I disagree, we'll discuss this in depth tomorrow.

i need to watch this again when the kids aren't 'playing' (aka yelling) near me, but my initial reaction is...what??? I don't agree with Drsicoll at all.

And yeah, I had the same thought as Jeremy - provide doesn't just mean bring in money.

I've been puzzling over Driscoll's video. Seems very extreme to me that this warrants church discipline at Mars Hill. Where does he get some of his ideas?

Hey Howie,

Here is my take on this video. Driscoll quotes 1 Timothy 5:8. In context, this is talking about widows and providing for them. This has nothing to do with a dad staying home with his children. Also, the gk. pronoeo (which is what Jeremy referenced) does not have specific connotation to fiscal provisions, however the verse seems to be implying that by the context. Still though, this is talking about providing for widows, not about a man staying home with his 2 1/2 year olds. If church discipline needs to be administered it is because of a misinterpretation of the Scripture. The first thing I learned at Moody was that context is the most important part of interpretation. I guess he slept through that part of Hermeneutics.

You're doing a great job, Howie. Jenn and I are proud of you and are proud to call you our brother.

would love to talk more about this sometime. scripture is pretty clear and yet there is some room for grace in different siutations. great that you are thinking through it.
